Duke Xuan's Ninth Year
In the ninth year, in spring, in the first month of the Zhou calendar, Duke Xuan of Lu went to Qi. Duke Xuan of Lu returned from Qi to Lu.
In summer, Zhongsun Mie went to the royal capital.
The Marquis of Qi attacked the Lai state.
In autumn, [Lu] captured Genmou.
In the eighth month, the ruler of the Teng state died.
In the ninth month, the Marquis of Jin, the Duke of Song, the Marquis of Wei, the Earl of Zheng, and the Earl of Cao met at Hu.
Xun Linfu of Jin led an army to attack Chen.
On the day Xinyou, Marquis Heitun of Jin died at Hu.
In winter, in the tenth month, on the day Guiyou, the Marquis of Wei, Zheng, died.
The people of Song surrounded Teng.
The Viscount of Chu attacked Zheng.
Xi Que of Jin led an army to rescue Zheng.
Chen killed its own grandee, Xie Ye.
In the ninth year, in spring, the Son of Heaven sent an envoy to Lu to seek a bride. In summer, Meng Xianzi went to the Zhou royal house on a diplomatic mission. The King of Zhou considered him knowledgeable in ritual and rewarded him generously.
In autumn, [Lu] captured Genmou, meaning it was easily done.
Duke Zhao of Teng died.
The meeting at Hu was to punish those states that did not submit. The Marquis of Chen did not attend, so Xun Linfu of Jin led the allied army to attack Chen. The Marquis of Jin died at Hu, and the army then withdrew and returned.
In winter, the people of Song surrounded Teng, taking advantage of Teng's mourning period.
Duke Ling of Chen, along with Kong Ning and Yi Xingfu, all had illicit relations with Xia Ji. The three of them wore Xia Ji's undergarments in the court and engaged in frivolous behavior. Xie Ye remonstrated, saying: "The ruler and the high ministers openly display licentiousness; the common people will have no model to follow, and it will bring a bad reputation. My lord, please put away those garments." Duke Ling of Chen said: "I can correct this." Duke Ling of Chen told this to Kong Ning and Yi Xingfu, and these two requested to kill Xie Ye. Duke Ling did not forbid it, so they killed Xie Ye. Confucius said: "The Book of Songs says: 'When the people are given to much evil, do not set up your own standards.' This probably refers to Xie Ye."
The Viscount of Chu, because of the battle at Li, attacked Zheng.
Xi Que of Jin rescued Zheng. The Earl of Zheng defeated the Chu army at Liufen. The people of Zheng were all delighted, but only Ziliang was worried, saying: "This is a disaster for the state. I have not many days left to live."
