In the second year, in spring, the first month of the Zhou calendar.

In summer, in the fifth month, on the day renchen, the Ji Gate and the two watchtowers caught fire.

In autumn, the people of Chu attacked the state of Wu.

In winter, in the tenth month, the Ji Gate and the two watchtowers were rebuilt.

In the second year, in summer, in the fourth month, on the day xinyou, a group of youths from the Gong clan killed Duke Jian.

The state of Tong rebelled against Chu. The king of Wu sent the Shujiu clan to entice the people of Chu, saying: “If you approach our state with an army, we will attack Tong on your behalf; do this for us, so that Chu may have no cause for concern.”

In autumn, Nang Wa of Chu attacked the Wu army in Yuzhang. The people of Wu displayed their boats in Yuzhang (to deceive the Chu forces), while secretly laying an ambush in Chao. In winter, in the tenth month, the Wu army attacked the Chu army in Yuzhang, defeated them, then surrounded Chao, captured it, and took prisoner Gongzi Fan of Chu.

Duke Zhuang of Zhu was drinking with Yi Shegu. Yi Shegu left the palace gates privately. The gatekeeper begged him for some meat, but Yi Shegu seized the gatekeeper’s staff and struck him with it.
