Duke Ding, 3rd Year
In the third year, in spring, the first month of the Zhou calendar, Duke Ding of Lu went to Jin. When he reached the Yellow River, he turned back.
In the second month, on the day xinsi, Duke Zhuang of Zhu passed away.
Summer, the fourth month.
Autumn: Duke Zhuang of Zhu was buried.
Winter: Zhongsun Heji and the Viscount of Zhu held a covenant at Ba.
[In the third year, spring, the second month, on the day xinsi, Duke Zhuang of Zhu stood on the gate tower and looked down into the courtyard. The gatekeeper was using a jar to sprinkle water in the courtyard. Duke Zhuang saw this and became very angry. The gatekeeper said, “Yishegu urinated here.” Duke Zhuang ordered Yishegu to be arrested, but he was not caught. This made him even angrier. He jumped down from his bed, fell onto the charcoal brazier, and his skin festered, so he died. First, five chariots were buried with him, and then five people were also buried alive as sacrifices. Duke Zhuang of Zhu was hot-tempered and fond of cleanliness, and so he met this end.]
[In autumn, the ninth month, the Xianyu people defeated the Jin army at Pingzhong and captured Guan Hu of Jin. This was because Guan Hu relied on his own bravery.]
[In winter, a covenant was held at Tan to renew friendly relations with Zhu.]
[Marquis Zhao of Cai made two jade pendants and two fur garments and went to Chu. He presented one jade pendant and one fur garment to King Zhao of Chu. King Zhao of Chu put them on and held a banquet to entertain Marquis Zhao of Cai, who also wore the other set. Zichang wanted both items, but Marquis Zhao of Cai would not give them to him, so Zichang detained him for three years. Duke Cheng of Tang went to Chu. He had two “sushuang” horses. Zichang wanted them, but Duke Cheng of Tang would not give them, so Zichang also detained him for three years. The people of Tang discussed among themselves and asked to replace those who had first accompanied Duke Cheng of Tang. Duke Cheng agreed. They made the first companions drunk, stole the horses, and presented them to Zichang. Zichang then sent Duke Cheng of Tang back. The horse thieves went to the judicial officer and surrendered themselves, saying, “Because our lord loved playing with horses, he caused himself to be imprisoned and abandoned the state. Your servants request to help the horse keepers compensate for the horses, and it must be done in this way.” Duke Cheng of Tang said, “This is my fault. Do not humiliate yourselves.” So he rewarded them all. When the people of Cai heard of this, they earnestly urged Marquis Zhao of Cai to present the jade pendant to Zichang. Zichang, when attending court, saw the attendants of Marquis Zhao of Cai and ordered the relevant officials, saying, “The reason the Marquis of Cai has been detained so long is because you have not provided the gifts. If the gifts are not prepared by tomorrow, you will be executed.” Marquis Zhao of Cai returned home. When he reached the Han River, he took the jade pendant and sank it into the river, swearing, “If I ever cross this river southward again, may this great river be my witness!” Marquis Zhao of Cai went to Jin and offered his son Yuan and the sons of his high officers as hostages, requesting to attack Chu.]
