Duke Ai's Tenth Year

In the tenth year, in spring, in the second month of the Zhou calendar, Yi, the Viscount of Zhu (Zhu Zi Yi), fled and came to (Lu).

Duke Ai of Lu joined with Wu to attack Qi.

In the third month, on the day Wuxu, Dao, the Duke of Qi (Qi Hou Yangsheng), died.

In summer, the people of Song attacked Zheng.

Zhao Yang of Jin led an army to invade Qi.

In the fifth month, Duke Ai of Lu returned to Lu from the campaign against Qi.

Duke Dao of Qi was buried.

Gong Meng Chu of Wei returned to Wei from Qi.

Bo Yi of Xue died.

In autumn, Duke Hui of Xue was buried.

In winter, Prince Jie of Chu led an army to attack Chen.

Wu came to the aid of Chen.

In the tenth year, in spring, Yi, the Viscount of Zhu, fled and came to (Lu). He was the nephew of Qi, and therefore fled again to Qi. Duke Ai of Lu joined with the King of Wu, the Viscount of Zhu, and the Viscount of Tan, to attack the southern border of Qi, and the army camped at the place of Xi.

The people of Qi killed Duke Dao of Qi, and announced the mourning to the allied forces. The King of Wu wept at the army gate for three days. Xu Cheng led a naval force, intending to enter Qi from the sea, but the people of Qi defeated them, and the Wu army then withdrew.

In summer, Zhao Yang led an army to attack Qi. The grand officers requested divination to determine good or ill fortune. Zhao Meng said: "I have already divined for the raising of troops at this place. Great matters cannot be divined twice; divination will not necessarily repeat the same auspice. Simply proceed." They then occupied the places of Li and Yuan, dismantled the outer wall of Gaotang, and invaded as far as Lai before withdrawing.

In autumn, the King of Wu sent a person to again announce the date for mobilizing troops.

In winter, Ziqi of Chu attacked Chen. Yan Zhou Lai Jizi of Wu came to the aid of Chen and said to Ziqi: "The rulers of the two states do not devote themselves to virtue, but contend for the feudal lords with military force. What crime have the people committed? I request to withdraw, thereby to complete your good reputation. I ask you to devote yourself to virtue and to pacify the people." He then withdrew his army and returned to his state.
