Duke Huan, Year 16

In the sixteenth year, in spring, the first month, Duke Huan met with the Duke of Song, the Marquis of Cai, and the Marquis of Wei at Cao.

In summer, the fourth month, Duke Huan met with the Duke of Song, the Marquis of Wei, and the Marquis of Chen.

The Marquis of Chen attacked Zheng.

In autumn, the seventh month, Duke Huan returned from the place where Zheng was attacked.

In winter, a wall was built at Xiang.

In the eleventh month, Wei Hou Shuo fled to Qi.

(The Zuo Commentary explains:) In the sixteenth year, in spring, the first month, the meeting at Cao was to plan an attack on Zheng.

In summer, Zheng was attacked; in autumn, the seventh month, Duke Huan returned from the place where Zheng was attacked, and this was to perform the "drinking arrival" ceremony.

In winter, a wall was built at Xiang, recording that it was in season.

Formerly, Duke Xuan of Wei had an illicit relationship with Yi Jiang, and she bore Jizi. He entrusted Jizi to the Right Son. For Jizi, he took a woman from Qi as a wife; this woman was very beautiful, and Duke Xuan took her for himself, and she bore Shou and Shuo. He entrusted Shou to the Left Son. Yi Jiang hanged herself. Xuan Jiang and Prince Shuo slandered Jizi before Duke Xuan. Duke Xuan sent Jizi as an envoy to Qi, and also sent bandits to wait at Shen to kill him. Shouzi told Jizi about this and urged him to flee. Jizi did not agree, saying, "To disobey a father's command, how could one still be a son? If there were a state without a father, then one might do so." When Jizi set out, Shouzi made him drunk with wine, and Shouzi took Jizi's banner and went ahead; the bandits killed Shouzi. Jizi arrived and said, "What they are looking for is me. What crime does this man have? Please kill me!" The bandits killed him as well. The Left and Right Sons therefore resented Duke Hui of Wei (Shuo). In the eleventh month, the Left Son Xie and the Right Son Zhi established Prince Qianmou as ruler. Duke Hui of Wei fled to Qi.
