Duke Huan

Duke Huan, Year 17

Chapter 17

In the seventeenth year, in spring, a covenant was made at Huang to promote peace between Qi and Ji and to discuss matters concerning Wei.

A covenant was also made with Yifu of Zhu at Cu, reaffirming the friendly relations established by the covenant at Mie.

In summer, there was a battle with the Qi army at Xi, which was a border conflict. At that time, the people of Qi invaded Lu's border, and the border officials came to report. Duke Huan of Lu said: "Concerning border affairs, guard your own territory diligently and prepare for unexpected events. For now, do your utmost to make preparations. If an incident occurs, then fight; why must you seek my instructions?"

Marquis Huan of Cai passed away. The people of Cai summoned Cai Ji from Chen.

In autumn, Cai Ji returned to Cai from Chen, and the people of Cai praised him.

An attack was made on Zhu to fulfill the wishes of Song.

In winter, on the first day of the tenth month, a solar eclipse occurred. The Spring and Autumn Annals did not record it because the Grand Astrologer had been negligent. The Son of Heaven had a Grand Astrologer, and the feudal lords had a Solar Recorder. The Grand Astrologer held the rank of a minister to calculate the calendar, which was in accordance with ritual propriety. The Solar Recorder did not neglect the recording of dates and submitted them to the hundred officials at court.

Previously, Duke Zhuang of Zheng intended to appoint Gao Qumi as a minister. Duke Zhao of Zheng detested him and strongly advised against it, but Duke Zhuang did not listen. After Duke Zhao of Zheng came to the throne, Gao Qumi feared that Duke Zhao would kill him. On the day of Xinmao, Gao Qumi assassinated Duke Zhao and installed Prince Wei as ruler. The junzi considered that Duke Zhao of Zheng was aware of those he detested. Prince Da said: "Will Gao Qumi be executed? His revenge against his enemy has gone too far."
