Duke Zhuang's Sixth Year
In the sixth year, in spring, in the first month of the Zhou calendar, the king's envoy Zitu led troops to rescue Wei.
In summer, in the sixth month, Wei Huigong, named Shuo, entered the capital of Wei.
In autumn, Duke Huan of Lu returned to Lu from the place where he had attacked Wei.
A plague of borers occurred.
In winter, people from Qi came to Lu to return the war spoils taken from Wei.
In the sixth year, in spring, the king's envoy rescued Wei.
In summer, Wei Huigong entered Wei, exiled Prince Qianmou to Zhou, exiled Ning Gui to Qin, killed Zuo Gongzi Xie and You Gongzi Zhi, and then ascended the throne. The junzi considered that Zuo Gongzi Xie and You Gongzi Zhi, in establishing Prince Qianmou, lacked foresight. Those who can secure the ruler's position must assess the entire sequence of events and then choose the appropriate person from among them. If one does not understand the root, one should not scheme; if one knows the root but cannot sustain it, one should not force it. The Book of Songs says: "The root and the branches, transmitted for a hundred generations."
In winter, people from Qi came to Lu to return the precious vessels of Wei; this was the result of Wen Jiang's request to Qi.
King Wen of Chu attacked the state of Shen and passed through the state of Deng. The Marquis of Deng, Qi, said: "This is my nephew." So he detained King Wen of Chu and feasted him. The three nephews, Zhui, Dan, and Yang, requested permission to kill King Wen of Chu, but the Marquis of Deng refused. The three nephews said: "The one who will destroy Deng is certainly this man. If we do not plan early, later you will regret it and it will be too late. Take advantage of now to devise a plan! If we are to act, now is the time." The Marquis of Deng replied: "If we do this, people will despise me for eating leftover scraps." The three nephews answered: "If you do not heed the words of us three, then the gods of the altars of land and grain will not receive sacrifices, and where will you get leftover scraps to eat?" The Marquis of Deng still did not comply. In the year of his return, King Wen of Chu attacked Deng. In the sixteenth year of Duke Zhuang of Lu, Chu attacked Deng again and extinguished it.
