In the twentieth year, in spring, Duke Li of Zheng attempted to mediate the conflict between King Hui of Zhou and Prince Tui but failed, and he arrested Yan Zhongfu. In summer, Duke Li of Zheng then escorted King Hui of Zhou back to his state, and King Hui resided in Li. In autumn, King Hui of Zhou and Duke Li of Zheng entered Wu, then proceeded to enter Chengzhou, where they took away the treasured vessels of Chengzhou before returning. In winter, Prince Tui hosted a banquet for the five high officers, and during the music performance, they performed all kinds of dances. When Duke Li of Zheng heard of this, he met with the Duke of Guo and said: "I have heard that if sorrow and joy lose their proper timing, calamity will surely come. Now Prince Tui indulges in song and dance without weariness—this is taking calamity as a joy. When the Minister of Justice carries out a death sentence, the ruler still reduces his meals and sets aside music for it. How much more so when one dares to take calamity as a joy? Usurping the throne—is there any calamity greater than this? Facing calamity yet forgetting sorrow—sorrow will surely descend upon him. Why not welcome King Hui of Zhou back to restore his rule?" The Duke of Guo said: "This is precisely my wish."
