Duke Zhuang's 27th Year
In the twenty-seventh year, in spring, Duke Zhuang of Lu met with Bo Ji of Qi at Tao.
In summer, in the sixth month, Duke Zhuang of Lu formed an alliance with the Marquis of Qi, the Duke of Song, the Marquis of Chen, and the Earl of Zheng at You.
In autumn, Prince You went to Chen to attend the funeral of Yuan Zhong.
In winter, Bo Ji of Qi came to Lu.
Qing, a grand master of Ju, came to marry Shu Ji.
The Earl of Qi came to pay a court visit.
Duke Zhuang of Lu met with the Marquis of Qi at Chengpu.
In the twenty-seventh year, in spring, Duke Zhuang of Lu met with Bo Ji of Qi at Tao; this was not a matter of state. The Son of Heaven does not go on tours of inspection unless it is to promote righteousness; the feudal lords do not take action unless it is for the affairs of the people; grand masters, without the ruler's command, may not cross the borders.
In summer, the alliance at You was formed because Chen and Zheng had submitted.
In autumn, Prince You went to Chen to attend Yuan Zhong's funeral; this was not in accordance with ritual. Yuan Zhong was an old friend of Ji You.
In winter, Bo Ji of Qi came; this was a visit to her natal home. In general, when a feudal lord's daughter returns to her natal home, it is called "coming"; when she is divorced and sent back, it is called "coming home in disgrace." When a ruler's wife goes to her natal home, it is called "going to such-and-such place"; when divorced and sent back, it is called "returning to such-and-such place."
Duke Xian of Jin was about to attack Guo. Shi Wei said, "It cannot be done. The ruler of Guo is arrogant; if he suddenly gains a victory here, he will surely abandon his people. When he has lost his people and we then attack him, even if he wishes to resist us, who will help him? Ritual propriety, music, kindness, and love are the conditions required for warfare. If the people understand yielding in affairs, delight in harmony, cherish their kin, and mourn the dead, then they can be used. Guo lacks these conditions, yet it repeatedly engages in warfare; this will lead to famine."
King Hui of Zhou sent Shao Bo Liao to bestow the appointment of hegemon on Duke Huan of Qi and also to request that Qi attack Wei, because Wei had supported Zitui as the Son of Heaven.
