Duke Xi

Duke Xi, 31st Year

Chapter 31

In the thirty-first year, in spring, the fields west of the Ji River were acquired.

Gongzi Sui went to Jin.

In summer, in the fourth month, four divinations for the suburban sacrifice were inauspicious, so the sacrificial victim was exempted, but the three Wang sacrifices were still performed.

In autumn, in the seventh month.

In winter, Lady Qibo came to seek a wife for her son.

The Di people besieged Wei; in the twelfth month, Wei moved its capital to Diqiu.

In the thirty-first year, in spring, the fields west of the Ji River were acquired; this was land divided from Cao. Zang Wenzhong was sent to receive it, and he stayed overnight at Zhong. The innkeeper at Zhong said to him: "Jin has recently gained the allegiance of the feudal lords, and will surely draw close to those who are respectful and compliant. If you do not act quickly, I fear it will be too late." Zang Wenzhong heeded this. The land divided from Cao extended from the Tao River southward, eastward to the Ji River, all of it being Cao's territory. Xiangzhong (Gongzi Sui) went to Jin to express gratitude for obtaining the fields of Cao.

In summer, in the fourth month, four divinations for the suburban sacrifice were inauspicious, so the sacrificial victim was exempted; this was contrary to ritual propriety. The three Wang sacrifices were still performed; this was also contrary to ritual propriety. According to ritual, regular sacrifices are not divined; only the sacrificial victim and the date are divined. An ox is called a 'victim' after the date has been divined and chosen. Since the victim had already been chosen, yet divination was still conducted on whether the suburban sacrifice was feasible, this showed negligence and contempt on the part of those in authority. The Wang sacrifice is a subsidiary rite of the suburban sacrifice. Since the suburban sacrifice was not performed, it would have been acceptable not to perform the Wang sacrifice either.

In autumn, Jin held a military review at Qingyuan and formed five armies to resist the Di. Zhao Cui was appointed as a minister.

In winter, the Di people besieged Wei, and Wei moved its capital to Diqiu. The divination result said: "It can last for three hundred years." Duke Cheng of Wei dreamed of Kang Shu (the founder of Wei), who said: "Xiang (a descendant of the Xia sovereign) has taken my offerings." Duke Cheng ordered that sacrifices be made to Xiang. Ning Wuzi considered this improper, saying: "Spirits and deities do not enjoy offerings from those of a different clan or lineage. What are the states of Qi and Zeng (descendants of Xiang) for? That Xiang is not sacrificed to has been the case here for a long time; this is not Wei's fault. The sacrificial regulations established by King Cheng and the Duke of Zhou cannot be changed. I request that you change the order to sacrifice to Xiang."

Xie Jia of Zheng detested Gongzi Xia, and the Earl of Zheng also detested him, so Gongzi Xia fled to Chu.
