Cold-Heat Disease
There are people suffering from cold and heat diseases of the skin, who cannot lie close to the mat, with withered hair and dry nose. If they do not sweat, take the collateral vessels of the three yang channels of the hand, and then supplement the hand taiyin channel.
For cold and heat diseases of the flesh, the muscles are painful, with withered hair and dry lips. If they do not sweat, take the lower points of the three yang channels of the foot, use bloodletting to remove stagnant blood, and then supplement the foot taiyin channel to induce sweating.
For cold and heat diseases of the bone, the patient is restless and agitated, with profuse sweating like a stream that does not stop. If the teeth are not yet dry, take the collateral vessel of the foot shaoyin channel on the inner side of the thigh; if the teeth are already dry, it is a fatal sign and cannot be treated. The same principle applies to bone reversal disease.
For bone bi disease, all the joints of the body are immobile and painful, with profuse sweating like a stream and mental turmoil. Take the channels of the three yin channels and use supplementation.
When the body is injured, with much bleeding, and additionally affected by wind and cold, or after falling from a height, with the limbs slack and unable to be controlled, this is called "body lethargy." Treatment involves taking the "three junctions" point below the navel in the lower abdomen. The three junctions point is where the foot yangming stomach channel and the foot taiyin spleen channel intersect, located at the Guanyuan point three cun below the navel.
For reversal bi disease, the reversal qi ascends to reach the abdomen. Take the collateral vessels of the yin and yang channels, observe the site of the main disease, use draining on the yang channels, and use supplementation on the yin channels.
The artery on the side of the neck is the Renying point. The Renying point belongs to the foot yangming channel and is located in front of the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Behind the sternocleidomastoid muscle is the hand yangming channel, called the Futu point. The next pulse downward is the foot shaoyang channel's pulse, called the Tianyou point. The next pulse downward is the foot taiyang channel's pulse, called the Tianzhu point. The artery under the armpit is the hand taiyin channel's pulse, called the Tianfu point.
When yang heat pathogenic qi ascends counterflow causing headache, with chest fullness and inability to breathe, take the Renying point.
Sudden loss of voice, with qi stuck in the throat, take the Futu point and the base of the tongue, and prick to release blood.
Sudden attack by wind, with qi mechanism clouded, ears and eyes unclear, take the Tianyou point.
Sudden onset of spasms, epilepsy, dizziness, and the two feet unable to support the body, take the Tianzhu point.
Sudden onset of bi disorder, with internal qi in rebellion, liver and lung qi clashing, blood issuing from the mouth and nose, take the Tianfu point. These are the five points of Tianyou.
The hand yangming channel has a branch that enters the cheekbone and spreads to the teeth, called the Daying point. For caries pain of the lower teeth, take the point on this branch. If there is aversion to cold, use supplementation; if there is no aversion to cold, use draining.
The foot taiyang channel has a branch that enters the cheekbone and spreads to the teeth, called the Jiaosun point. For caries pain of the upper teeth, take the point in front of the nose and cheekbone. At the time of onset, if the pulse is replete, drain it; if the pulse is vacuous, supplement it. Another version says to take the point emerging from outside the nose.
The foot yangming channel has a branch that flanks the nose and enters the face, called the Xuanlu point. It belongs to the mouth, faces inward to connect with the root of the eyes; observe the area of pathology and take the point. Reduce the excess, supplement the deficiency; if treated in reverse, it will worsen the condition.
The foot taiyang channel has a branch that passes through the nape and enters the brain, directly connecting to the root of the eyes, called the eye system. For headache and eye pain, take its point between the two sinews in the nape.
After entering the brain, it separately connects to the yin qiao and yang qiao vessels. The yin qiao and yang qiao intersect each other; the yang vessel enters the yin vessel, and the yin vessel emerges from the yang vessel, intersecting at the inner canthus. When yang qi is abundant, the eyes open; when yin qi is abundant, the eyes close.
For heat reversal disease, take the foot taiyin channel and the foot shaoyang channel, retaining the needle in both; for cold reversal disease, take the foot yangming channel and the foot shaoyin channel at points on the foot, retaining the needle in both.
When the tongue protrudes and does not retract, with drooling and mental distress, take the foot shaoyin channel.
For aversion to cold with shivering, lower jaw trembling, inability to sweat, abdominal fullness and distress, take the hand taiyin channel. When needling deficiency, follow the direction of qi departure (use supplementation); when needling excess, face the direction of qi arrival (use draining).
In spring, take collateral vessels; in summer, take the interstices of the flesh and striae; in autumn, take the qi opening; in winter, take the channel points and transport points. These needling methods for the four seasons are each adjusted according to the seasonal order. Collateral vessels treat skin diseases; interstices of the flesh and striae treat muscle diseases; the qi opening treats sinew and vessel diseases; channel points and transport points treat bone and marrow diseases.
The five viscera have five important locations on the body: first is Futu, second is the calf belly (the fibula, which is also the shank), third is the back, fourth are the back transport points of the five viscera, and fifth is the nape. If abscesses or gangrene occur at these five locations, it is a fatal sign.
When disease begins from the arm, first take the hand yangming channel and the hand taiyin channel to induce sweating;
When disease begins from the head, first take the foot taiyang channel on the nape to induce sweating;
When disease begins from the lower leg, first take the foot yangming channel to induce sweating.
The hand taiyin channel can induce sweating, and the foot yangming channel can also induce sweating. Therefore, when taking the yin channel to induce sweating excessively, take the yang channel to stop sweating; when taking the yang channel to induce sweating excessively, take the yin channel to stop sweating.
Harm from needling: If the needle strikes the pathogenic qi but is left in place without withdrawal, it will drain away essence qi; if the needle does not strike the pathogenic qi and is withdrawn, it will invite pathogenic qi. When essence qi is drained, the disease will worsen and cause exhaustion; when pathogenic qi is invited, abscesses and gangrene will occur.
