Classic of Difficult Issues: Pulse Studies

Ninth Difficulty

Chapter 9

How can one differentiate and identify diseases of the viscera and bowels?

Answer: When the pulse is rapid, it indicates a disease of the bowels; when the pulse is slow, it indicates a disease of the viscera. A rapid pulse corresponds to heat patterns, while a slow pulse corresponds to cold patterns. All yang pulses govern heat patterns, and all yin pulses govern cold patterns. Therefore, these are used to differentiate and identify diseases of the viscera and bowels.
