The Rattle of Chariots

Preface to "Che Lin": "Che Lin" is a poem praising Qin Zhong. Qin Zhong's power began to expand, and he possessed fine things such as chariots, horses, ritual music, and attendants.

The chariots rumble loudly, the horses have white foreheads. Before I have seen the noble man, I must first obey the eunuch's orders.

On the slopes there are lacquer trees, in the lowlands there are chestnut trees. Now that I have seen the noble man, we sit side by side and play the zither. If we do not enjoy ourselves in time, the days and months will pass and we will grow old.

On the slopes there are mulberry trees, in the lowlands there are poplar trees. Now that I have seen the noble man, we sit side by side and play the reed organ. If we do not enjoy ourselves in time, the days and months will pass and we will die.

"Che Lin" consists of three stanzas: the first stanza has four lines, and the second and third stanzas each have six lines.
