Mayflies

Preface: "The Mayfly" is a satire on extravagance. Duke Zhao of Lu's state was weak and in a precarious position, lacking proper measures to protect himself; yet he delighted in luxury and employed petty men, ultimately leaving himself with nothing to rely on.

The mayfly's wings,

Robes bright and neat.

In my heart truly worried—

Come to me for shelter.

The mayfly's pinions,

Garments ornate and colorful.

In my heart truly worried—

Come to me for rest.

The mayfly emerges from the earth,

Linen robes white as snow.

In my heart truly worried—

Come to me for repose.

"The Mayfly" has three stanzas, each of four lines.
