The Blind Musicians

Preface: The poem "You Gu" records the scene when music was first performed and offerings were made together to the ancestors.

Blind musicians, oh blind musicians, they gathered in the courtyard of the ancestral temple of the Zhou dynasty. They set up the bell frames and drum frames, decorated with raised teeth and adorned with feather plumes.

The ying drums and tian drums were hung, along with small drums, jade chimes, the zhu and yu instruments. All the instruments were prepared, and then the performance began; the flutes and pipes all played together. The sound was grand and harmonious, solemn and dignified, yet graceful and pleasing to the ear; the ancestors came to listen.
