Southern Wind

Chapter 32

"The Southern Wind"

Preface: "The Southern Wind" is a poem praising filial sons. The licentious of Wey spread widely; even a mother with seven sons could not find peace in her home. Therefore, it praises the seven sons for being able to fulfill their filial duty, thereby comforting their mother's heart, and thus fulfilling her aspirations.

The genial wind from the south blows,

Caressing the sprouts of the sour jujube tree.

The sprouts of the sour jujube tree are full of life,

But the mother is toilsome and weary.

The genial wind from the south blows,

Caressing the firewood of the sour jujube tree.

The mother is sage and good,

Yet we have no virtue.

Here is a cold spring,

Beneath the walls of Jun.

There are seven sons,

Yet the mother is toiling and distressed.

The yellow oriole warbles,

Uttering its beautiful voice.

There are seven sons,

Yet none can comfort their mother's heart.

"The Southern Wind" has four stanzas, each with four lines.
