Black Robes

Preface to "Black Robes": The poem "Black Robes" is a praise of Duke Wu. Both Duke Wu and his father once served as Ministers of Education (Sikou) of the Zhou dynasty. During their tenure, they performed excellently, and the people of the capital considered them highly competent. Therefore, the poet praises Duke Wu's virtue to elucidate the principle that those in high positions should treat worthy talents well and establish meritorious achievements.

How well the black official robe fits! When it wears out, I will make you a new one. I go to your lodging, and upon my return, I present the new robe to you.
