A Lady in the Same Carriage

Preface: "A Lady in the Same Carriage" is a satire on Prince Hu. The people of Zheng satirized Prince Hu for not marrying a woman from the state of Qi. Crown Prince Hu once rendered meritorious service to Qi, and the Marquis of Qi wished to marry his daughter to him. The woman of Qi was virtuous, but Prince Hu did not marry her. In the end, because he lacked the support of a major state, he was driven into exile. Therefore, the people of the capital city composed this poem to satirize him.

There is a lady riding in the same carriage with me—

Her face is lovely, like the hibiscus flower.

She will soar and dance in the air,

And the pendants she wears are fine jade.

That beautiful lady, Meng Jiang,

Is indeed lovely and graceful in her manner.

There is a lady walking with me on the same road—

Her face is lovely, like the hibiscus flower.

She will soar and dance in the air,

And the pendants she wears tinkle and chime.

That beautiful lady, Meng Jiang,

Has a virtuous character that is unforgettable.

"A Lady in the Same Carriage" consists of two stanzas, each with six lines.
