Waiting in Vain for Ding Da at the Master Ye’s Mountain Hut (Meng Haoran: Waiting in Vain for Ding Da at the Master Ye’s Mountain Hut)
Chapter 19
The setting sun slowly sinks into the western mountains, and in a moment the countless peaks and valleys have grown dim. The bright moon among the pines brings the coolness of night; the sounds of wind and spring fill the clear sense of hearing. The woodcutters have nearly all returned home, and the birds in the evening mist have just settled to rest. The friend I await (Ding Da) promised to lodge here tonight but has not yet come; alone, I hold my lute and wait on the path overgrown with vines.
