Eternal Longing (I Long for One in Chang'an) (Li Bai, Eternal Longing No. 1)

Chapter 79

The one I long for is in the city of Chang'an. In autumn, the katydid chirps by the well railing; light frost turns cold, and the bamboo mat feels chill. The lonely lamp is dim (or "sleepless"), longing almost breaks off; I roll up the curtain and gaze at the bright moon, only to heave a vain sigh. The beautiful one is like a flower (or "the distant appointed meeting") separated by the clouds. Above, there is the vast and boundless sky; below, green waters stir with ripples. The road is long, the heavens are far; even the soul's flight is toilsome, and the dream soul can hardly cross the peril of mountains and passes. Endless longing breaks the heart.
