Chapter 15

The Gathering (): Success. The king arrives at the ancestral temple. It is favorable to see the great person. Success. It is favorable to remain steadfast. Using a great sacrificial offering brings good fortune. It is favorable to have somewhere to go.

First Six: There is sincerity but it cannot be sustained to the end. Thus there is confusion, thus there is gathering. If one cries out, in the space of a handclasp it turns to laughter. Do not worry. Going forward brings no misfortune.

Six in the Second: Being led forward brings good fortune and no misfortune. There is sincerity, thus it is favorable to offer a modest sacrifice.

Six in the Third: Gathering with sighs. There is nothing advantageous. Going forward brings no misfortune, but there is a small regret.

Nine in the Fourth: Great good fortune. No misfortune.

Nine in the Fifth: Gathering in the honored position. No misfortune. There is not yet widespread trust, but if one can be enduringly steadfast, regret vanishes.

Top Six: Sighing and weeping. No misfortune.

The Commentary on the Hexagram:

Gathering means assembling. Compliant and joyful, the firm line occupies the center and responds, therefore it can gather. "The king arrives at the ancestral temple" expresses filial piety and sacrifice. "It is favorable to see the great person and there is success" because gathering is done through the correct way. "Using a great sacrificial offering brings good fortune and it is favorable to have somewhere to go" is acting in accord with the heavenly mandate. Observing what is gathered, the conditions of heaven and earth and the myriad things can be understood.

The Commentary on the Images:

A marsh above the earth forms the hexagram of Gathering. The noble one, in accordance with this, repairs weapons and prepares against unexpected changes.

"Thus there is confusion, thus there is gathering" because his mind is confused.

"Being led forward brings good fortune and no misfortune" because the central position is unchanged.

"Going forward brings no misfortune" because the one above is compliant.

"Great good fortune and no misfortune" because the position is not appropriate.

"Gathering in the honored position" because the ambition is not yet fully realized.

"Sighing and weeping" because one cannot rest securely in the high position.
