Abundance

Chapter 25

䷶ Feng (The Abundant)

Hexagram 55: Abundance. Success. The king arrives at it. Do not worry. It is fitting to be at the noon position.

First Nine: Meeting a matching host, even after ten days, there is no fault. Going forward brings praise.

Second Six: Increase the covering. At noon, one sees the Northern Dipper. Going forward brings disease of doubt. Sincerity moves others. Auspicious.

Third Nine: Increase the banners. At noon, one sees the small stars. Breaking one's right arm, there is no fault.

Fourth Nine: Increase the covering. At noon, one sees the Northern Dipper. Meeting a host of equal standing, auspicious.

Fifth Six: Attracting brilliance and radiance, there is celebration and praise. Auspicious.

Top Six: Increase the house. Screen the household. Peep at the door. It is silent, with no one. For three years, no meeting. Misfortune.

Commentary on the Judgment:

Abundance means greatness. Brightness and movement, thus abundance. The king arrives at it, esteeming greatness. Do not worry, fitting at noon, meaning it fits to illuminate all under heaven. The sun reaches noon and then declines; the moon becomes full and then wanes. Heaven and earth's fullness and emptiness increase and decrease with the times. How much more for humans? How much more for ghosts and spirits?

Commentary on the Image:

Thunder and lightning both arrive—this is the image of Abundance. The noble one thus judges cases and executes punishments.

Even after ten days, there is no fault, but beyond ten days, there is calamity.

Sincerity moves others, using sincerity to express the will.

Increase the banners, meaning one cannot undertake great affairs. Breaking one's right arm, ultimately it cannot be used.

Increase the covering, meaning the position is not fitting. At noon, seeing the Northern Dipper, it is dark and unclear. Meeting a host of equal standing, auspicious, because of action.

The auspiciousness of the Fifth Six means there is celebration.

Increase the house, meaning soaring in the sky. Peep at the door, silent with no one, meaning one hides oneself.
