Dui signifies joy. Within firmness, without gentleness, joy is beneficial for maintaining correctness. Thus it accords with the Way of Heaven and responds to human hearts. Using joy to guide the people, the people forget their toil; using joy to face danger, the people forget death. How great is the function of joy! It can stir the people!
The Commentary on the Image says:
Two lakes conjoined form the image of Dui. The noble person, in accordance with this, discusses and practices learning together with friends.
