The Book of Changes

The Zhongfu hexagram: Using a pig and fish for sacrifice brings good fortune. It is favorable to cross great rivers. It is favorable to maintain correct firmness.

The first nine line: Careful forethought brings good fortune. If there are other changes, there will be no peace.

The second nine line: A crane cries in the shade, and its young echo the call. I have fine wine; I wish to share it with you and enjoy it together.

The third six line: Encountering an opponent, sometimes beating the drum to advance, sometimes ceasing and retreating; sometimes weeping, sometimes singing.

The fourth six line: The moon approaches fullness. The horse is lost. No misfortune.

The fifth nine line: Bound together by sincerity, no misfortune.

The top nine line: The sound of a bird soars into the sky. Maintaining correct firmness brings danger.

The Commentary on the Judgments says

In the Zhongfu hexagram, the yielding is within while the firm occupies the central positions. Pleasing and humble, sincerity arises from this, and thus it can transform the states. "Using a pig and fish for sacrifice brings good fortune" means that sincerity can reach even such humble things as pigs and fish. "It is favorable to cross great rivers" because one rides in a hollow boat (empty in the center, able to bear things). "The Zhongfu hexagram is favorable for maintaining correct firmness" because it accords with the Way of Heaven.

The Commentary on the Images says

A gentle wind blowing over the great marsh is the image of the Zhongfu hexagram. The noble one, in accordance with this, deliberates on cases with sincerity and mitigates the death penalty.

The first nine line's "Careful forethought brings good fortune" is because the will has not changed.

"The young crane echoes the call" arises from the inner heart.

"Sometimes beating the drum, sometimes ceasing" is because the position is not appropriate.

"The horse is lost" means cutting off the same kind and advancing upward.

"Bound together by sincerity" is because the position is correct.

"The sound of a bird soars into the sky"—how can this condition last long?
