In the ninth month, the people of Song captured Zhai Zhong of Zheng; Prince Tu returned to Zheng, and the Crown Prince Hu of Zheng fled to Wey.

Rou formed an alliance with the Duke of Song, the Marquis of Chen, and Shu of Cai at Zhe.

Duke Huan of Lu met with the Duke of Song at Fu Zhong. In winter, in the twelfth month, Duke Huan of Lu met with the Duke of Song at Kan.

In the eleventh year, in spring, the states of Qi, Wey, Zheng, and Song formed an alliance at E Cao.

Qu Xia of Chu was about to form an alliance with the states of Er and Zhen. The people of Yun stationed troops at Pu Sao, intending to attack the Chu army together with the states of Sui, Jiao, Zhou, and Liao. The Mo Ao was worried about this. Dou Lian said: “The people of Yun are encamped in the outskirts; they will surely be unprepared and are daily expecting the arrival of the armies of the four states. You station yourself at Jiao Ying to resist the four states, and I will lead elite troops to attack Yun by night. The people of Yun, with their minds set on hoping for reinforcements and relying on the strength of their city walls, will have no will to fight. If we defeat the Yun army, the four states will surely scatter.” The Mo Ao said: “Why not request reinforcements from the ruler?” Dou Lian replied: “The success of an army lies in unity, not in numbers. The disparity in troops between the Shang and Zhou dynasties is something you have heard of. Deploy the army as it is; why ask for more troops?” The Mo Ao said: “Let us consult the oracle.” Dou Lian replied: “Divination is used to resolve doubts. If there is no doubt, why divine?” So they defeated the Yun army at Pu Sao and eventually formed the alliance and returned.

When Duke Zhao of Zheng defeated the northern Rong, the people of Qi wished to marry their daughter to him, but Duke Zhao declined. Zhai Zhong said: “You must marry her. The ruler has many favorites within the palace; if you lack a powerful external support, you will not be able to establish yourself as ruler. The three princes may all become rulers.” Duke Zhao did not listen.

In summer, Duke Zhuang of Zheng passed away. In the beginning, Zhong Zu, the border officer of Zhai, was favored by Duke Zhuang of Zheng, who made him a minister. He arranged for Duke Zhuang to marry Deng Man, who bore Duke Zhao; therefore, Zhai Zhong established Duke Zhao as ruler. The Yong clan of Song married their daughter to Duke Zhuang of Zheng; she was called Yong Ji and bore Duke Li. The Yong clan was favored by Duke Zhuang of Song, so the people of Song lured Zhai Zhong and captured him, saying: “If you do not establish Prince Tu, we will execute you.” At the same time, they also captured Duke Li and demanded valuables. Zhai Zhong formed an alliance with the people of Song, brought Duke Li back to Zheng, and established him as ruler.

In autumn, in the ninth month, on the day Ding Hai, Duke Zhao of Zheng fled to Wey. On the day Ji Hai, Duke Li of Zheng ascended the throne.
