We do not operate user accounts and do not sell your personal information.
Reading data in the Huangdi Neijing app (bookmarks, notes, progress, etc.) stays primarily on your device and is not synced to our servers.
The app uses Google Play Billing for purchases and may show ads through Google AdMob, including rewarded videos to unlock chapters.
The website is static: it stores language and reader preferences locally in your browser and does not use our own analytics or ad scripts.
Scope
This Privacy Policy explains how Orient Smile (“we”, “us”, or “our”) handles information
in connection with the following services (together, the “Services”):
The mobile app Huangdi Neijing (黄帝内经, Android; iOS not yet available)
Huangdi Neijing is an offline-first reading app. Except as described under third-party services below,
the following is stored locally on your phone or tablet via Android DataStore / local storage and is
not uploaded to Orient Smile servers:
Content language and reader preferences (theme, font size, typeface, line spacing, letter spacing)
Bookmarks and chapter unlock status (including chapter IDs unlocked after watching rewarded ads)
Highlights, annotations, and notes you create in the text
In-app search history (up to 10 recent queries per content language)
Text-to-speech settings (speech rate and selected system TTS voice; speech is processed on-device)
Ad-removal subscription / in-app purchase status (if you buy)
Book text is bundled in the app for offline reading. The app requests Internet, network state, and Google Play
Billing permissions for ads, purchase verification, and related network operations.
If Android app backup is enabled (allowBackup), some local data may be included in device or Google
account backups depending on your system and Google settings.

The following third parties may collect or process information under their own privacy policies:
Google Play & Google Play Billing
The app offers optional in-app purchases (such as an ad-removal subscription). Google processes payments;
we receive only confirmation needed to deliver the purchase, not your full payment card details.

Google AdMob (advertising)
The app may show banner ads, in-reader native ads, and rewarded video ads used to unlock chapters.
Google and its partners may use identifiers such as the advertising ID, device information, and approximate
location (derived from IP) to deliver, measure, and prevent fraud in advertising, subject to your consent
and device settings.
You can limit ad personalization in Android Settings → Google → Ads
Privacy or consent prompts may appear in the app where required by region and Google policies
Our site is a static bilingual reading website. It does not require registration or login.
We do not currently deploy our own analytics, tracking, or advertising scripts on the website.
The site may store the following in your browser’s localStorage:
Language preference (os-locale)
Reader display settings such as theme and font size (os-reader-prefs)
This data stays in your browser and is not sent to Orient Smile. The site is hosted on GitHub Pages;
standard web server or CDN logs (IP address, browser type, requested URL, timestamps) may be generated by the
hosting provider. We do not use those logs for profiling or cross-site tracking.
Pages may load Google Fonts; Google may process limited technical information as described in Google’s policies.
How we use information
We (and necessary service providers) use information to:
Provide reading, search, bookmarks, annotations, text-to-speech, and chapter unlock features
Remember language and display preferences on the website
Process and honor in-app purchases and subscriptions through Google Play
Display and measure advertising through AdMob where enabled
Maintain stability, respond to inquiries, and comply with legal obligations
Sharing of information
We do not sell personal information. We share information only with service providers
necessary to operate the Services (such as Google for billing and advertising), when required by law,
or to protect the rights and safety of users and Orient Smile.
Your choices
App data: Clear storage in system App info, or uninstall the app.
Ads: Limit ad personalization in Android ad settings; respond to in-app consent prompts where shown.
Purchases & subscriptions: Manage through Google Play payment and subscriptions.
Website data: Clear site data / localStorage in your browser settings.
Data retention
On-device app data: until you clear it or uninstall the app.
Payment and ad data processed by Google: according to Google’s policies.
Website localStorage: until you clear it in your browser.
Security
We use reasonable measures to protect information within our control. No method of transmission or storage is
completely secure. Because most reading data stays on your device, device lock, system updates, and backup
settings also matter for your privacy.
Children’s privacy
The Services are intended for general audiences interested in classical Chinese medicine texts. They are not
directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect
personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, please
contact us using the email below and we will take appropriate steps.
International users
The Services may be accessed from different countries. Third-party providers such as Google may process
information on infrastructure located worldwide, in accordance with their policies and applicable law.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time and will change the “Last updated” date at the top.
Material changes may also be described on this page or in the app. Continued use of the Services after an
update means you accept the revised policy.
